The Jerusalem Temple Will Be Rebuilt Within Seven Years
Two thousand years is a long time to wait but now the wait is over. This year, 2016,
is the year the countdown begins for the final seven years before the first seal
is broken. Events that set up the Tribulation will begin to happen very quickly now.
One of those events is the rebuilding of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. As unlikely
as it may seem to many now, it certainly will happen within the next seven years.
A temple will be rebuilt in Jerusalem before the Tribulation
It is clear that another temple will be built on the temple mount before the Tribulation
begins. The Lord Jesus tells us that the Abomination of Desolation will take place
in the middle of the Tribulation period as an image of the beast is set up in the
Jerusalem temple for all the world to bow down to. This is the event that will kick
off the Great Tribulation, the second 3 ½ years of the General Tribulation period.
“Therefore when you see the Abomination of Desolation which was spoken of through
Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then
those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains... For then there will be a great
tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now,
nor ever will be.” Matthew 24: 15-22.
The antichrist will seat himself in the temple and declare himself to be god, setting
up his image there for all the world to worship.
“...for it (Second Coming and Rapture) will not come unless the apostasy comes first,
and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts
himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat
in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.”II Thessalonians 2:3-4.
“And it was given him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image
of the beast would even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the
beast to be killed.” Revelation 13:15.
The outer court will be given over to the Gentiles
Revelation 11 also describes a Tribulation temple. John is told to measure the temple
but specifically told to leave out the outer court.
“Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, “Rise
and measure the temple of God, the alter, and those who worship there. But leave
out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been
given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two
months.” Revelation 11:1-2. (NKJV).
This may be a description of a Jewish temple on the Temple Mount with the Dome of
the Rock and the Al Aqsa Mosque still intact. “…for it has been given to the Gentiles.”This may be a prophecy that another temple will indeed be built on the Temple Mount
without tearing down any of the Muslim buildings.
Only the temple building and the inner court are “measured,” that is, legitimately
built according to Scripture, but the area of the outer court is not measured because
it will be defiled with pagan buildings and other gods will be worshipped there.
By contrast, the great temple of the Messianic age of Ezekiel 40-48 is measured with
all of the outer court and structures being fully measured and not excluded. This
is an indication that every bit of this Millennial temple complex will be built exactly
according to God’s instructions in His Word.
Ezekiel: a profane building right next to the temple
“And the house of Israel will not again defile My holy name…by setting their threshold
by My threshold and their door post against My doorpost, with only the wall between
Me and them.”Ezekiel 42:7,8.
In Ezekiel, God condemns the fact that only a wall will separate the holy temple
from other profane religious structures. Evidently this is a prophecy about the Dome
of the Rock that will sit right next to the Jewish temple building. I don’t think
this has been true of the temple area before, that pagan structures shared the mount
with a Jewish temple, so it must be a prophecy about the Tribulation period. The
temple that the Lord Jesus will build when He returns will correct this abomination.
Ezekiel: “foreigners” in charge of the sanctuary
When the temple is rebuilt, Gentiles will still be in charge of the Temple Mount
area: “But you have set foreigners to keep charge of my sanctuary.” Ezekiel 44:8.
This has never been the case during the history of Israel, that non Jews were given
charge of the temple area and even the temple itself, so this has to be a reference
to the Tribulation temple. Jordan’s Waqf, the Muslim authorities who are in charge
of the Temple Mount today, may be the “foreigners” Ezekiel was talking about. For
some inexplicable reason the Israelis turned the entire Temple Mount over to the
complete control of the Muslims after Israel liberated it from Jordan in the 1967
war and that is still it’s status today.
A temple for the antichrist and abomination of desolation
The antichrist will sit on the Temple Mount as god in the name of Satan.
"But you said in your heart, “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above
the stars of God, and I will sit on the mount of assembly...” Isaiah 14:13.
Israel will enter into a seven year covenant with the beast to reinstate worship
in the temple.
“And he (the beast) will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in
the middle of the week, he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on
the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete
destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”Daniel
A covenant/lease for building the temple and worshipping there
A compromise between the Muslims and the Jews may be brokered by the antichrist who
will make a covenant with the Jews to allow them to reinstate worship and sacrifices
in their own temple for seven years. This may be as much of a land lease agreement
as a peace treaty. The Jews may rent property on the Temple Mount area by means of
a religious covenant of sorts to sanction their right to build a temple and worship
there. Like any lease, but unlike a political treaty, this covenant will be of limited
duration with the assumption that it will be renewed after seven years.
The false "Elijah" may authorize the temple construction
The false prophet, a ally of the antichrist, will be widely believed to be Elijah,
which will give him the authority, according to some Jewish scholars, to authorize
the building of the third temple. Muslims may also accept the antichrist as the Mahdi
(a Muslim messiah) and so he could persuade them to let a temple be built on the
Temple Mount. Of course the antichrist will break the covenant after 3 ½ years and
take over Israel, seating himself in the temple as god and setting up an image there
to be worshipped by all the world, the infamous abomination of desolation.
Temple built north of the Dome of the Rock
The next temple, then, will have to be built beside the Muslim buildings standing
there today. To even fit there, the tribulation temple complex would have to be much
smaller than the second temple complex of the first century. It would also probably
have to be on the north side of the Dome of the Rock and west of the blocked East
Gate. It would include only the temple itself and the inner court where the sacrificial
alter will stand. The rest of the Temple Mount area would be at the disposal of the
Gentiles, primarily the Muslims but could also include an area for other religions.
It may be touted as the center of the ecumenical brotherhood of all religions as
envisioned by the false prophet. It would probably be considered the coup de grace
of the antichrist’s persuasive diplomatic skills.
There has been a lot of pressure to make Jerusalem an “international” city. The transformation
of the Temple Mount into a place of worship for all nations and all religions will
fulfill the prophecy of the outer court to be given to the Gentiles, that is, under
sovereign control of the Gentiles, not the Jews. This isn’t like the “court of the
Gentiles” of the second temple, which was under strict Jewish control that allowed
only the worship of Israel’s God, but it would be an area on the Temple Mount where
the Gentiles could worship false gods and even demonic spirits.
Rebuilding the temple in violation of God’s “measurements” is wrong
Christians should not encourage the Jews to rebuild the temple or celebrate its construction
even though it will be a fulfillment of Bible prophecy. The Scriptures are clear
that the temple should be rebuilt only according to God’s “measurements” when Jesus
returns. The next temple will be built against God’s instructions, defiled by the
Gentiles and end up as a place for the throne and image of the beast. Rebuilding
the temple will bring catastrophe on Israel because they will have to enter into
a biblically illegal covenant with the antichrist. They soundly rejected the New
Covenant with Jesus but unfortunately they will enter into this covenant with this
false Messiah which will end up disastrously for them. The beast will break his word,
betray the Jews, destroy the modern state of Israel and cause the death of millions
of Israelis. That's why Jesus told them to flee to the mountains when they see the
abomination of desolation set up. Many are going to barely escape with their lives
and two thirds of Israelis will die.
"Therefore when you see the Abomination of Desolation which was spoken of through
Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then
those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Whoever is on the housetop must
not go down to get the things out that are in his house. Whoever is in the field
must not turn back to get his cloak." Matthew 24:15-18.
“…he (the beast) shall destroy the unsuspecting.” Daniel 8:25 (MLB).
“It shall come about in all the land, declares the Lord, that two parts in it will
be cut off and perish; but the third part will be left in it...” Zechariah 13:8.
The Jews alone have the right to the Temple Mount
The Jews and no one else have a right to the land of Israel, to Jerusalem, and to
the Temple Mount area and have a right to build the temple but only under the Lord’s
command and instructions. Jesus will have the temple of the Messianic age built when
He returns, until then it is a bad idea.
“...and David My Servant will be their Prince forever...will set My sanctuary in
their midst forever.” Ezekiel 37:25-26.
“...son of man, describe the temple (of the Messianic age) to the house of Israel...that
they may observe its whole design and all its statues and do them.” Ezekiel 43:10-11.
Ultimate peace agreement: a Palestinian state for a Jewish temple?
In spite of tremendous international and terrorist pressure, the Israelis have resisted
the Palestinian’s demand for a separate state in the West Bank. They know if they
let this happen, it will almost cut Israel in half, making it near impossible to
defend strategically and will also provide a staging ground for their enemies to
attack them like they do from the Gaza strip. But even many conservatives and religious
Jews have called for two states in the land of Israel. Giving up land for peace doesn’t
work when those you are negotiating with are calling for the complete destruction
of the Jewish nation. The Jews in Israel may come to a point, though, that they want
a temple on the Temple Mount so bad that they are willing to give up the west bank
for it. Of course this will turn out to be a tragic mistake.
What if the Ark of the Covenant were found?
That would be probably a great impetus for the Jews to rebuild the temple if it is
currently on earth somewhere. We know it’s still in existence because it will appear
in heaven at the end of the Tribulation according to Revelation 11:19, but so far,
there doesn’t seem to be any clear Biblical evidence that it still resides somewhere
down here. God only knows what the next shovel full of dirt will uncover at some
archeological site in Israel.
The next temple built by the Muslims?
The next temple may not be built by the Jews at all but by the Muslims. The Jordanian
Waqf seems to almost have the authority to build whatever they want on the Temple
Mount, so why not a temple? Even the temple of Christ's day was rebuilt by an Arab
Edomite, Herod the Great. If the next temple were built by Muslims, that would probably
defuse any conflict that would arise between the Islamic world and the Israelis over
the issue. The Dome of the Rock would remain while the Muslims build a temple complex
just north of there. The Jordanian Waqf, being in charge of this temple, could then
lease it (seven year covenant under the antichrist) to the Jews for worship and sacrifices.
It would take someone with a golden tongue to convince both parties to agree to this,
but that is exactly who the beast will be.
